Google has celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Egyptian writer Ahmed Khaled Tawfik, who died last year, with a regional Google Doodle.
Tawfik (10 June 1962 – 2 April 2018) was one of the first Egyptian writers to specialise in horror, science fiction and fantasy, and his work included both illustrated books and novels, among them the bestselling series Ma Wara Altabia (“Metaphysics”), and his 2008 hit novel Utopia.
His style attracted wide and diverse readerships, but he was particularly popular with young readers.
His passion for horror writing initially faced obstacles, as publishing houses did not think that the genre had a readership in Egypt.
He died of a heart attack at the age of 55.
