Egypt’s mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva participated on Saturday in a celebration held on the occasion of Africa Day 2019, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.
Alaa Youssef, the representative of Egypt’s mission to the UN office in Geneva, spoke at the event about the efforts of African countries to achieve the 2063 agenda goals, including the strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years.
Egypt is the chair of the African Union for 2019.
Youssef said that the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), which will be implemented in July 2019, will make Africa the world’s biggest free trade zone.
Youssef also highlighted that Egypt hosted a number of important African events this year including the Arab African Youth Forum, the 64th ordinary session of the African Commission on Human Rights, and the upcoming African Cup of Nations 2019 in July.
Youssef added in his speech that as the chair of the African Union, Egypt will continue to prioritise investments in infrastructure and supporting peace and security as well as sustainable funding to the African Union and its programmes.
