For the first time ever, a team that didn’t win a trophy in the previous season has won the Super Cup. Real Madrid beat city rivals Atletico Madrid in penalty kicks during Sunday’s final in Saudi Arabia to claim the Spanish Super Cup
Real scored all four of its penalty kicks while Atleti missed its first two, allowing Los Blancos to take home the crown 4-1 from the spot.
Sergio Ramos got the winning penalty kick. He hit it softly down to the left and sent Jan Oblak the other way to start the celebration.
The shootout victory also kept Zidane’s undefeated record in finals, with the Frenchman winning all nine showpieces he has reached with Real as a coach.
Oblak and Courtois were the top performers in a cagey 90 minutes which forced extra time for the fifth consecutive final between the city rivals since 2013.
