Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, received on Sunday afternoon Vincenzo Amandola, Undersecretary of the Italian Foreign Ministry, who is currently visiting Cairo.
The meeting discussed means of enhancing the existing relations of cooperation between the Arab League and Italy, as well as exchange of views on the latest developments related to priority issues in the Arab arena, particularly the Palestinian issue and the settlement of disputes in Syria, Libya and Yemen.
Abul-Gheit expressed his appreciation for Italy’s support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
He reiterated his demand to the Italian government to recognize the independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, while the undersecretary of the Italian Foreign Ministry affirmed his country’s commitment to continue its support for the Palestinian Authority and other international agencies working in the occupied Palestinian territories until a just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question is reached on the basis of a two-state solution.
Abul-Gheit stressed the importance of intensifying Arab-European cooperation in the coming period to enhance the complementary work between the two sides in order to address the common challenges facing them.
He noted the Arab League’s keenness to continue its coordination with the European Union to hold the first Arab-Europen summit during the first quarter of 2018, which will give a strong strategic impetus to the relations of cooperation between Arab and European countries.
